If you have had unprotected sex and believe you may be pregnant, the Aim Women Center is your best first step. We can offer you an on-site pregnancy test free of charge. Pregnancy tests are most accurate when taken between 21 to 24 days after the first day of your last period.
A pregnancy test detects the hormone known as hCG, which is found in the urine of pregnant women. One of our compassionate staff members will administer the test and review your results with you directly after the test.
Also, if you have had unprotected sex, you might be at risk for an STD/STI. A Sexually Transmitted Infection can lead to serious harm to you and your pregnancy if left untreated. We test for Chlamydia and Gonorrhea if you have a positive pregnancy test and can give you referrals for any other testing you may need.
After your pregnancy has been confirmed through one of our medical-grade pregnancy tests, your next step is to have an ultrasound (also free of cost!) An ultrasound can determine how far along you are, detect a fetal heartbeat and identify the location of the pregnancy. If your pregnancy develops outside of the uterus, this is called an ectopic pregnancy and can be life-threatening.
An ultrasound can also reveal the risk that you might miscarry. 30% of all pregnancies do not carry to term and 80% of all miscarriages happen in the first trimester (first 13 weeks.) If it is found that you are at risk for a miscarriage or have an ectopic pregnancy, you may not need to have an abortion; instead, it would be necessary for you to seek prompt medical attention.
When you set up an appointment with Aim Women Center, our medical team can give you the information you need and answer any questions you might have.
